Frequently Asked Questions
Who Can Participate in Art Therapy?
For individuals under the age of 3 years old I would recommend play therapy as an alternative. Other than that the answer is basically everyone. We can always make adjustments to art materials and how they are used in order to make them accessible for use by anyone.
What About Caregivers?
Caregivers are absolutely welcome to participate in their own art therapy sessions. Caregiving can be extremely rewarding, however it can also be very difficult and emotionally draining. Caregivers deserve time to process and reflect on what is happening around them just as much as the people they care for.
Do I Have to be Good at Art?
Nope! Sometimes the most healing art is “ugly art.” At times when we are so focused on creating a “pretty” finished product we are not entirely focused on the mental and emotional journey, which is the real point of the art making in this scenario. Aside from having a product at the end, art making is also a way to relax, manage anxiety and confusing emotions, as well as learn to use new coping skills.
Do I Have to Pay for Materials?
No. As the art therapist I provide all of the art materials and adaptive equipment we may use in our sessions. I also will offer suggestions about materials that would be easiest to use given each person’s specific medical needs.
What if I’m Not Able to Use Art Materials the Way I Was Before?
Art materials can be adapted and assistance can be provided by the art therapist to fit each client’s specific needs. I will always work with you to find a solution that feels comfortable for you.
What is the Cost?
The price for a 50 minute individual session is $125 per hour. Family sessions are conducted at $150 per 50 minute hour. An additional 30 minutes can also be added to individual sessions if appropriate for $25. This includes the therapy session, all art materials, and the therapist driving to your location. Clients strongly wishing to participate who are unable to afford this price are still encouraged to contact the therapist.
Do You Take Insurance?
Unfortunately not at this time. I hope to accept insurance by November of 2021.
What if I Try it and I Don’t Like it?
We can always make adjustments or take a different approach with the art making if a client is not comfortable. It is also ok to ask to refrain from art making during sessions if a client feels unable (this is where we could have more of a traditional “talk therapy” session). Finally, If someone tries art therapy and decides it’s not for them, that’s ok! We are all different and I can either adapt to what you need or I can make referrals for other types of therapy.
